Fort Macon State Park

Atlantic Beach, NC, Milepost #0 (252-726-3775)

Reenactments and musket firing demonstrations relive Civil War history at Fort Macon State Park.

Journey back in time through the military history of our coast at Fort Macon State Park.  Built between 1826 and 1834 to guard the entrance to Beaufort Harbor, this fort was intermittently garrisoned before being seized by Confederate troops at the outbreak of the Civil War.  The fort was reclaimed by Union soldiers in an eleven hour bombardment on April 25, 1862 and was used as a prison during the Reconstruction Era.   Fort Macon was regarrisoned in 1898 for the Spanish-American War and from 1941 -1945 during World War II.

Since 1924, Fort Macon has been North Carolina's most visited state park.  In addition to the fort, the park features and excellent recreation area with lifeguard-protected swimming, a bathhouse and a picnic area.  It is a favorite spot for fishing, bird-watching and shelling.
